For many centuries, a diamond engagement ring gift to a lady has been used as a symbol of commitment and love. Like many old traditions the gifting of an engagement ring originated from Egypt with its circular shape symbolizing the eternal circle. The engagement ring was and is still worn on the fourth finger (counting the thumb also) of the left hand where the vein was believed to lead straight to the heart. This led to the inception of a custom which has become a global tradition.
Progressing to later centuries; 1477 to be precise, the custom of diamond engagement rings began. Archduke Maximillian of Austria gifted a beautiful diamond engagement ring to Mary of Burgundy. This gesture give him an upper hand over her many other suitors. Engagement rings became a famous mark to a proof of commitment and show of everlasting love.
Prior to the birth of diamond engagement rings, steel and other metals were also used to make engagement rings given its toughness, strength, and durability. In recent times, gold and platinum are often used since they are more valuable. Diamonds are believed to be long-lasting, which is most suitable for a show of affection between couples. The eternal and indestructible union between lovers is often represented by a Solitaire diamond ring. Some religious organizations take diamond rings to represent chastity and purity until marriage.
WHY ENGAGEMENT RINGS ARE TRADITIONALLY DIAMONDS
Diamonds are expensive and treasured because they are precious. And that could that be the reason why engagement rings are predominantly diamonds. Men who gift their ladies diamond rings may be just trying to show to the world that, as precious and expensive as diamonds are, it’s worth is non-comparable to the value they have placed on their women. Though I wouldn’t say that’s the only reason because it is only an assertion made by me. But only further research can prove this to be right or wrong.
In the meantime, research findings reveal that among the perhaps many reasons why engagement rings are diamonds, one has over time proven to be more occurring and may have gained acceptance than the others. So many inventions, innovations, and traditions that are very popular these days were older discoveries that gradually crept into the 21st century.
The birth of diamond engagement ring is rooted in the aggressive campaign of the De Beers; who in the quest of selling its product carried out a mind-blowing marketing strategy in selling off diamond engagement rings to men; while making them believe it is an assurance to the ladies that their love for them is real.
